Friday, January 26, 2001 – The programme for national level activities in observance of Saint Lucia’s 22nd Anniversary of Independence has been finalized. Among the activities is a National Day of Prayer scheduled for the Castries Methodist Church on February 20th.

As is customary, an Independence Day Parade takes place at the Mindoo Phillip Park at 7:30 a.m.  on February 22nd, followed by an Ecumenical Service at the Vigie Sports Complex. The Ecumenical Service has been organized by the Saint Lucia Christian Council.

Other events, which will take place at the national level, include a National Gospel Concert at the Derek Walcott Square and a number of receptions, chief among them one hosted by Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony on the evening of February 22nd 2001.

The Sent Lisi Par Excellence Awards scheduled for February 3rd (organized by the Saint Lucia Tourist Board in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism) and the National Sports Awards scheduled for February 17th are two major gala events forming part of this year’s national independence activities.  The awards have been formally incorporated in the Independence Anniversary celebrations for the last two years.

Activities at the national level also include the Governor General’s programme, which constituted activities marking Nobel Laureate Week. Additionally, Independence games and school-based activities have been organized under the National Sports Programme.

Meanwhile the programme for Independence activities at the community level is currently being printed and will be available to the public shortly.

The theme for this year’s 22nd Independence Anniversary celebrations is: “Respect, Tolerance and Togetherness.”
