Tuesday, May 08, 2001 - The St. Lucia Nurses Association is repositioning itself to help in the fight against violence. This will be the emphasis during a week of activities to reflect on their contribution towards nation building. Nurses’ week, from May 6th to 12th, will run under the theme,  “Nurses, always there for you, united against violence.”

Activities opened on Sunday May 6th with a church service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, followed by an opening ceremony at the CSA centre. Community service day on Monday May 7th allowed for the organisation and implementation of anti-violence campaign activities.

According to Marcia Johnny, Chairperson of the Nurses’ Week Committee, on that day nurses were expected to work along with the community police force, social workers, town councils, clinics and hospitals to mount a joint anti violence campaign or any other necessary activity in their designated areas or communities.

Other activities for the week include the presentation of a case study on management of violence in the workplace, a radio talk show on violence, its effects, impact and prevention, a workshop aimed at improving nurses’ response to gender-based violence, and a debate on the topic, “A man’s home is his castle: women are subservient to men.”

The Association believes that this year’s theme reflects the dramatic increase in violent acts within the society and the increasing role that nurses play in attending to victims of violence, particularly trauma and the provision of emotional support to victims.

Nurses’ week culminates on May 12th, International Nurses Day, with a dinner and awards ceremony.
