tuning the sod at Dennery fire station siteThursday, October 25, 2001 -- Government is making significant headway in its bid to bring about a major improvement in the service offered to the public by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and the Fire Service.

Following the opening earlier this year of the spanking new Marchand Police Station,    police in Marigot, Anse-la-Raye, Canaries, Choiseul and Laborie are getting ready to move into brand new or significantly improved stations before the end of the year or early next year at the latest.

Micoud is also getting a new police and fire station. Final touches were being made to the architectural designs this week in preparation for the start of construction. Richfond, Dennery is also getting a new police station, to replace the existing one at La Caye. This project is expected to be put out for tender within the next two weeks.

The improvement of police and fire facilities, with the aim of providing a better working environment and improving community access in some instances, falls under a $25 million project being financed by the National Insurance Property Development and Management Co. Ltd. (NIPRO) under an agreement with Government.

Matthew Sagusighn - CEO NIPROGiving an update on the project, chief executive officer of the NIPRO, Matthew Sagusingh, said the Marigot station was almost complete, except for “a few cosmetic things” and construction of the new Anse-la-Raye station was well-advanced. “This week, they should be finishing the roof (on the Anse-la-Raye station), the Canaries police station is all completed, save for a few cosmetic items,  and both the Canaries and Marigot police stations will be officially opened in the very near future,” he said.

Renovations of  the Choiseul and Laborie police stations are also proceeding apace. According to Sagusingh, work on the Choiseul station is expected to be completed by December while the Laborie station will be finished either in January or early February.

Work on new fire stations being constructed at Dennery and Gros-Islet is going well and should be completed within the stipulated time, he said.
