September 18, 2001- Residents of the Shanty Town community in the Vieux-Fort South Constituency over the weekend ended a two- day clean-up campaign in that area. The exercise involved the removing of derelict vehicles, and the clearing of drains and other areas of unsightly and unhygienic refuse.

Parliamentary Representative for that constituency Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony who was involved in the clean-up exercise applauded the residents and the Vieux-Fort Town Council for their efforts. Dr. Anthony said the exercise was intended not only to improve the appearance of the community, but also to begin to give residents a sense of identity. “I have a little dream for them, if you look around it is a very poor community.  My simple dream for them is that one day very soon the Government of St. Lucia will make it possible for them to own the land that they have occupied for several years,” he said.

Shanty Town residents have been assured that in the coming months they will continue to see several projects and initiatives that will significantly improve their social conditions.  The Government of St Lucia has already begun to provide the community with pipe borne water and electricity in areas where these basic amenities did not previously exist; and in the next two weeks  will be starting the construction of several footpaths in the community. “One of the things that this government has been emphasizing over the last three to four years is uplifting the environment, cleaning the environment. We have made progress but we have not achieved as much as we could have. I want to see a new St. Lucia, a different St. Lucia, and a St. Lucia that we all can be proud of. So in our small way here in Vieux-Fort South we are making a statement not only to the rest of our constituency but I hope to St. Lucia as a whole,” noted Dr. Anthony.

Meanwhile there are plans afoot to change the name of the community. This is expected to be formalized when the community celebrates Shanty –Town day on October 1, 2001.
