- A critical resurgence of the activities leading up to the implementation of
local government on the island is to get underway here this week via a series of
community based outreach programmes. Assistant Director of Community Services
and Local Government Auguste Gaspard explained that the first meeting carded for
Tuesday, October 30, 2001 targets residents in the north in an effort to bring
them up to speed, on developments relating to local government.
“The Local Government Reform Project is a brainchild of this (the Labour Party)
administration and we anticipated then that we would have this wrapped up and
implemented within two years,” said Gaspard. “However as the process unfolds we
realized that it’s taking more than we anticipated and that we need to ensure
that communities are fully apprised of the process not rushing into it at all.
According to Gaspard the ministry wants the total populace to understand,
appreciate and be in tune with the process so that when it is time to implement
local government initiatives, everyone would be clear on what they are about.
Local government
reform is aimed at empowering communities to take decision on their future.
The October 30
meeting in Babonneau will be followed by a meeting in Anse-La-Raye for residents
on the west coat and one is Vieux Fort for residents in the southern portion of
the island.
The
completion and implementation date for the local government reform process has
now been set for early 2002.
