Monday, May 07, 2001 - As St. Lucia joins the rest of the world in celebrating Red Cross Day today May 8th, Governor General of St. Lucia and Patron of the St. Lucia Red Cross Society, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, has commended the St. Lucia Red Cross Society for its contribution to the community over the past fifty years.

In her message to mark the day, the Governor General noted that the Society’s five-year development plan that ends in 2005, demonstrates the commitment of the Red Cross to improving both the quality and the range of its interventions in the community.  The Red Cross, she says, is aware that it is a well-respected organization, which continues to attract a large number of volunteers particularly among the youth, who are willing to give of their time and energy.

According to Her Excellency, all over the world National Red Cross Societies act as auxiliaries to the public authorities of their own countries, in the humanitarian field and provide a range of services including disaster relief, health and social programs.  Its work in disaster relief is well known. What is perhaps not so well known is that the Red Cross’s mandate requires that it provide feeding for the first seventy two hours following a disaster,” added Dame Pearlette.

The St. Lucia Red Cross Society is attempting to expand its disaster preparedness and response programme, in an effort to strengthen its ability to provide an effective relief system through first aid training programmes, pre-positioned disaster relief supplies and preparedness education.

As this year’s hurricane season approaches, the St. Lucia Red Cross is getting into full disaster-preparedness mode.  The Red Cross encourages all St. Lucians to do the same, and to improve their preparation and response capabilities.
