Wednesday, September 20, 2000 - St. Lucia and other sub-regional states will be looking eagerly to discuss the latest developments in relation to telecommunications reform and financial services supervision as they prepare to participate in the annual Miami Conference slated for the first week in December, 2000.

The Miami Conference is a grouping of private sector policy makers and investors from the Caribbean, Latin and North America. Economic Policy Advisory in the Office Private Sector Relations Adrian Augier says the conference provides a unique opportunity for St. Lucia’s public and private sector agencies to make headway on investment promotion.

He says this year’s conference will also discuss the evolution of governance mechanisms in the Caribbean and its relationship between economic management and political leadership in the region.

"We had quite a lengthy debate on this and we’re hoping that it will actually get into the larger agenda and thereby raise issues about whether or not government as it is traditionally structured in these islands is at odds with the principles of proper economic management. There are a lot of trade offs, a lot of compromises because our markets and economies are under developed and we’re trying to encourage the debate about whether or not the two objectives of political leadership and economic management are, in fact, well suited to the structure of government that we now have," said Augier.

Mr. Augier says the issues outlined in the agenda of the Miami Conference hold special interests for St. Lucia and other regional states that are critically involved in reforming and modernizing their telecommunications sector.

Several of these sub-regional states have also ventured into the risky financial services sector and continue to face mounting pressures from the larger and more well established jurisdictions.
