Local Designers to Stage their Creations for Fashion Awareness 2000 |
Contact: Dana Augustin Thursday, May 18, 2000 – In an effort to promote its Buy Local Campaign, the Ministry of Commerce, International Financial Services and Consumer Affairs will be hosting Fashion Awareness Week, commencing May 27 in Saint Lucia, under the theme "Fashion Expose’ 2000 – Developing a Local Touch to Fashion." The event, which has been going on for the past three years, showcases the work of local fashion designers and manufacturers and assists persons to develop a sense of appreciation for areas such as sewing and craft. Commerce and Industry Officer in the ministry, Marie Edward said, "We’ll be hosting a series of lectures at various secondary schools for the garment and textile students. We’re also having a one-week attachment of students to the Gretec training institute where ten students will benefit from that programme." Gretec is a private technical and vocational institution, which specializes in areas such as sewing and home management. There will be a three – day exhibition at the Castries City Hall, a lunchtime fashion show at the Derek Walcott Square, and conferences on the fashion industry, at other locations as well. Sixteen designers and manufacturers are expected to participate. These include Fashion Designer Gregory Lorde, Fashion Expressions, Immortals, and Country Shop, among others. Although it is a local effort the ministry is hoping to extend similar trade and fashion shows to other countries of the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States. |
