Friday, September 01, 2000 - Members of both the Public Service and the Private Sector are poised to improve productivity in their respective spheres of activity. This is due to a bold initiative by the Ministry of the Public Service which will be conducting a ‘Productivity Improvement Programme’ in collaboration with the Civil Service Association and the National Productivity Council.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Public Service, Wilbert King, says the programme is meant to make participants cognizant of how critical productivity is in the work environment. He stressed that in this atmosphere of fierce competition, workers have to be "conscious of the need to use whatever they have at their disposal to the greatest benefit". Mr. King is hopeful that the training seminar will motivate the participants to strive for maximum productivity in their activities.

The private sector is playing a significant role in the programme as The Office of Private Sector Relations is helping to finance the project at a cost of over $100,000. However, it is not only local agencies that are involved in this undertaking, the Barbados-based National Productivity Council will be playing an advisory role. Mr. King says that the Council is known in Barbados for its excellence in productivity training and the St. Lucian programme will benefit from its expertise.

The three-day seminar begins on September 5 at the Caribbees Hotel and is the first in a series of training sessions that will take place over the next twelve months.
