Wednesday, May 03, 2000 - Education officials have wrapped up a high-powered regional donor agency meeting here, as they sought to sell an ambitious five-year, two hundred and thirty million dollar education plan to major funding agencies.

Deputy Chief Education Officer, Marcellus Albertin, says government will fund one hundred and eighty-four million dollars of that amount via capital projects and is hoping to secure support from other donor agencies to implement the 2000–2005 plan.

“When we invite the donors here we are hoping to get substantial commitment from them towards financing part of the cost. I need to say that we are not only looking at money when we’re talking about support for the plan. But we’re looking at various forms of partnerships. We’re looking at maybe technical assistance that might be offered. In essence, we are not here with our caps in hand asking for people to dump in money, but whatever support they can give we would welcome it,” Albertin said.

According to the education official, “We have here the group of education donors operating in the Anglophone Caribbean and they include organizations like the World Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank, the Department for International Development, CIDA, UNESCO, UNDP and the European Delegation and we would like them to lend support in some way to this education plan.”

Ministry personnel say positive feedback has already been received from many of the donor agencies.  Already one particular component of the Education Plan is to be financed by the World Bank.
