Tuesday, May 09, 2000 – As Saint Lucia joined the rest of the world in observing World Red Cross Day Monday, the island’s Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy is challenging Saint Lucians to work towards building a better and more secure future for humanity. "It is with this philosophy in mind therefore that the (Red Cross) Movement is challenging itself and others to dare to dream of a better future for humanity. For the next five years therefore all its humanitarian programmes, activities and operations will be inspired by the theme The Power of Humanity," the Governor General said.

The Red Cross Movement the world over is committed to serving the needs of the people of the region. According to the Governor General, this effort is usually undertaken at some cost to the Society and so, she is urging business organisations and individuals to assist the Red Cross in this endeavour. "The spirit of community, indeed the spirit of humanity, is manifested in an outstretched hand. Whether it be an individual response or the collective action or persuasion of an organisation, let us stretch out our hand in support of the Saint Lucia Red Cross so that they can respond with greater ease to many requests for humanitarian help and action which daily flood their office," she ended.

The Governor General is the patron of the Saint Lucia Red Cross.
