BS00864A.gif (2535 bytes)January 12, 1999 - The Government of St. Lucia has confirmed that the Telephone Tax will be abolished on March 31, 1999.

According to the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony, the move is in keeping with pronouncements made during the budget presentation to the nation. Arrangements Dr. Anthony says are being made for repealing the legislation, which authorized the tax in the first place.

The telephone levy imposed by the former United Workers Party administration, has been one of the more unpopular pieces of legislation passed in recent times. The imposition of the tax drew outright protest from certain sections of the community and demonstrations from the then opposition St. Lucia Labor Party.

Prime Minister Anthony says government is anxious to make telecommunications services easily affordable to the public.
