August 24, 1998 - The European Development Fund has approved EC $150,000 dollars to execute a project for analyzing the needs of senior citizens.

The project, which will commence in September, has the following terms of reference:

bulletTo conduct an assessment of the needs of the elderly in St. Lucia.
bulletHelp design cost effective measures for establishing and operating institutional care human resource development centers and home based care.
bulletConduct an assessment of the human and material resource necessary for the provision of care or the elderly.
bulletHelp design outcome indicators to allow for ongoing evaluation of the programs.
bulletIdentify systems, equipment and programs necessary to establish Human Resource Development Centers.
bulletExamine the objectives outlined and subject strategies to effect the same.

Minister for Health, Family Affairs and Gender Relations the Hon. Sarah Flood says, "We hope that this evaluation will take a period of 2 months which will then guide us to how we will move forward for the development of care for the elderly." The Minister made those remarks during a one-day retreat on health sector reform held in Soufriere.
