May 22, 1998 - IN AN EFFORT TO MEET THE ISLAND WIDE DEMAND FOR MUSIC LESSONS, THE ST. LUCIA SCHOOL OF MUSIC PLANS TO OPEN IN SEPTEMBER A NEW CENTRE TO SERVE THE WESTERN REGION. APART FROM CASTRIES A CENTRE HAS BEEN IN OPERATION IN VIEUX FORT SINCE 1990. DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC, JOHN BAILEY SAYS THAT THE CENTRE WILL BE BASED IN SOUFRIERE AND IS EXPECTED TO DRAW STUDENTS FROM AS FAR AS CANARIES AND CHOISEUL.

THE MAIN CONCERN SAYS MR. BAILEY, IS NOT THE ACQUISITION OF INSTRUMENTS WHICH CAN BE DONATED BY MEMBERS OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN THE SOUFRIERE AREA. THE AVAILABILITY OF QUALIFIED MUSIC TEACHERS HAS PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNE MOMENT FOR THE LAUNCHING OF THE LONG AWAITED MUSIC SCHOOL FOR THE WESTERN REGION.

INITIALLY, THE NEW CENTRE WILL OFFER SATURDAY CLASSES IN KEYBOARD, GUITAR, BRASS INSTRUMENTS, RECORDER AND SINGING. COURSES WILL ALSO BE OFFERED TO CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 4 -6 YEARS IN A PROGRAMME REFERRED TO AS THE SCHOOL'S EARLY CHILDHOOD "ADVENTURE IN MUSIC" COURSE.

THE SCHOOL IS APPEALING TO MEMBERS OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR, PARTICULARLY THIS OPERATING IN SOUFRIERE AND ITS ENVIRONS TO JOIN THE NATIONAL COMMERCIAL BANK IN MAKING FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS THE SUCCESS OF THE UNDERTAKING.

MEANWHILE, STUDENTS WISHING TO REGISTER SHOULD FILL IN AND FORWARD TO CASTRIES THE CENTRE'S APPLICATION FROM THE SOUFRIERE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND THE SOUFRIERE BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL COMMERCIAL BANK.
