September 11, 1998 - Dialogue aimed at strengthening the economic and trade relations between the governments of Saint Lucia and the People’s Republic of China are taking place here. A ten-member delegation is currently in Saint Lucia to hold discussions with government officials and business entrepreneurs on forging trade and business relations between the two countries.

Yesterday Assistant Trade Minister Mr. Yang Wengsheng met with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony and Saint Lucia’s governor general Her Excellency Dr. Pearlette Louisy. The Chinese delegation is here for a ceremony marking commencement of work on a Free Trade Zone in the Southern part of the island. Yang – "My visit here is to further explore ways in the fields of economic and trade cooperation between China and Saint Lucia It goes without saying that bilateral relatios have progressed smoothly since we established diplomatic relations."

Her Excellency, welcomed the delegation to Saint Lucia. She says though the relationship between the two countries is just beginning, there is great potential for the relationship in the future. "I know that we have the language barrier, but I hope that friendship and good will help us over come that to work together in harmony," the Governor General said.

Later today government representatives from the two countries will be involved in the groundbreaking ceremony for the two million US dollar Free Zone Project and National Stadium. The ceremony begins at 5:pm in Vieux Fort.
