September 10, 1998 - An Economic and Trade Delegation from the People’s Republic of China began a one week visit to Saint Lucia, on Tuesday. Assistant Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, Mr. Yang Wengsheng heads the delegation.

The main purpose of the trip is to participate in the ground breaking ceremony for a Free Trade Zone for Vieux Fort which has a completion date of September 1999, is aimed at enhancing the development of Vieux Fort and to generate employment in the south of the island. It will also create greater linkages between local industrial enterprise and the distribution sector, which will help expand their market base.

The National Development Corporation is the local executing agency for the Project, while the Chinese government will finance the construction costs.

Mr. Yang Wenhgsheng and Saint Lucia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. George Odlum will sign an agreement for the disbursement of two million US dollars for the commencement of the Project and also the construction of a National Stadium.

Today the delegation will meet with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony and also the island’s Governor General, Her Excellency Dr. Pearlette Louisy. The delegation will also meet with local entrepreneurs at the NIS Conference Room.
