August 2, 1997 - St. Lucia's Tourism Director, Mrs. Agnes Francis has been featured in the latest issue of a US Travel magazine as one of the two hundred most powerful women in the travel industry. Mrs. Francis was featured as part of an expose on women in tourism done by Travel Agent the travel industry publication most widely read by Travel Agents. The article feature's several aspects of Mrs. Francis' career as a tourism industry professional as well as some of her innovations in the marketing of St. Lucia's tourism product since she took on the position of Director of Tourism in 1994. It also mentions some of the initiatives undertaken by Mrs. Francis including the Island Adventure Programme, a travel incentive programme which was devised specifically to boost visitor arrivals to St. Lucia from the US during the summer months.

Although the magazine is a US publication, it also has an international edition which is read by travel industry professionals all over the world. Mrs. Francis was listed among women from all over the world who are making significant contributions to the travel industry world wide. Among the other women mentioned were Leslie Doggett, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Tourism Industries International Trade Administration of the US Commerce Department and Mina Gabor Secretary of Tourism in the Philippines.

Commenting on her selection as one of the 200 most powerful women in travel and tourism Mrs. Francis says. "I feel very privileged to be recognized as one of the 200 most powerful women in tourism worldwide." She says she is particularly pleased that the level of recognition has come from one of the most respected publications in the industry. Mrs. Francis's inclusion in this prestigious group is welcome news for the island, as it will generate much awareness of the island and its tourism product.
