November 17, 1997 - Saint Lucia has been elected to the 54 Member Economic and Social council, after eight rounds of voting of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Voting started on Thursday October 30, 1997, with St. Lucia failing to fill one of the seventeen vacancies. On Wednesday November 5, in round eight of the voting session Saint Lucia was elected.

The members of the Council are elected according to the following pattern of geographic distribution : 14 from among the African States, 11 from the Asian States, six from Eastern European States, 10 from Latin American and Caribbean States and 13 from Western European and other States.

Commenting on the process of voting before Saint Lucia was elected, Charge d'Affaires of the Saint Lucia Mission to the United Nations, Sonia Leonce Carryl explained, that it was a necessary and important process for CARICOM which faced the possibility of no representation on Economic and Social Council, when the fourteen states of the sub region make up almost 45% of the membership of the Latin American and Caribbean group with only ten seats allocated to the region.

Mrs. Leonce Carryl thanked all Member States that supported Saint Lucia's candidature to the Council and congratulated the other Member States that have been elected.
