Prime Minister of St. Lucia the Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony and CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington, met with members of both local and foreign press Tuesday, to brief them on the agenda for the three day working sessions of the Caricom Conference.

On Wednesday , the session will begin with a report from the new Community Council of Ministers on the irradication of Rubella in the Caribbean; the inclusion of Anguilla as an associate member of the community , and the tourism and air transport marketing strategies within the CARICOM states. The progress as well as the obstacles faced by the establishment of a single market and economy will also be open for discussion.

In the afternoon session , the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice will be looked at, after which the heads of government will meet with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States and the Deputy Secretary Generals of both the UN and the Commonwealth, to discuss relevant issues dealing with their respective organizations and the region. The delegates will then make preparations for their meeting with His Excellency President Nelson Mandela of South Africa.

On Thursday the sessions will continue as the heads discuss negotiations with Lome and the Summit of America , focusing particularly on free trade issues. This will be followed by a report from the president of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group, Billy Miller of Barbados, on agreements with Colombia and the Dominican Republic after which the heads will hold discussions with the social partners of CARICOM , the private sector, trade unions and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s).

The heads of government will then look at the expectations of the CARICOM community over the next decade after which they will hold the greatly anticipated meeting with President Mandela. Particular problematic situations in the region as well as the millenium problem will also be discussed.

The working sessions will conclude on Friday, July 3 with the delegates retreating to Jalousie for a closed session.
